OUR DEPARTMENTS
We currently have three departments under the school of Architecture, Land Mgt, Urban & Regional Planning
Architecture
The Department of Architecture was established in 1997 though it started in the year 1998 as a department within the then college of Engineering and Architecture, the entire college was transferred to Juba, South Sudan in 2007. It continues to maintain its status as a department within the newly established school of Architecture, Land Management, Urban and Regional Planning (SALMUARP) The Architecture program in the department is anchored in studio-based pedagogy, which supports the main goals of the architecture education: to teach students a diversity of skills, technical ability and artistic thinking. The program features a series of project-based studios in which students produce designs and plans that address issues of varying complexity. The skill sets that students develop in studio learning may include research, analysis, creativity, critical thinking…etc. Studio work is supported by courses that were designed to address theoretical, historical and technical issues .
Land Management
Land is indispensable for human existence and is the backbone of any human activity. Because land is invaluable to humanity, it is a highly emotive subject and without good Land Management practices, serious conflicts occurred in the past and are still occurring worldwide. Land problems become even more challenging when there are no, few, or inadequate professionals to take up the challenge. Land Management presents. In the history of the world, conflict over land caused untold suffering, some of which were of genocidal proportions. Following the foregoing brief citations, when South Sudan achieved its independence in 2011, it was immediately confronted with the challenge of land conflicts and it had to set up some Land Management structures in place. However, these efforts were thwarted due to serious inadequacies in Land Governance professionals, requisite equipment, funding, and legislation. To mitigate these challenges, the University of Juba established the Department of Land Management in the newly established School of Land Management, Urban and Regional Planning and Architecture to train professionals on various aspects of Land Management.
Urban & Regional Planning
Urban Planning is a process of guiding the use and development of land with the aim of making the city a better place to live and work. Particularly important today as more than one-half of the world’s population now resides in urban places. Cities, towns and other urban forms are therefore the sites for most of mankind’s activities. Yet in most cities and towns, land and access to basic resources and services are usually scarce and unevenly distributed. Planning is ‘a general activity…the making of an orderly sequence of action that will lead to the achievement of a stated goal or goals’. the University of Juba established the Department of Urban and Regional Planning in the newly established School of Architecture, Land Management, and Urban and Regional Planning to train professionals who will, after training on the various subjects on Urban and Regional Planning and take up the tests on Cities Planning is simply a special case of general planning which incorporates a spatial component Understood as a rational (highly technical) and systemic process of forethought set in motion by the need to resolve urban and regional problems.
